A Word About Terminology The terms “career transition,” “career counseling,” "outplacement" and "client" may confuse people. Outplacement firms do not "place" individuals in the sense that the firm will make all arrangements with a prospective employer. Firms that "place" individuals are known as recruiters, employment agencies, and temporary staffing agencies. The term "career transition" is replacing the term "outplacement." “Career counseling” refers to the one-to-one interaction between the counselor and “client.” The “client” of the career transition firm is usually the employer or some other third party sponsor such as an insurance company who pays the fee. Career transition firms may also work with individuals who pay the fees directly. In this instance, the individual would be the “client.” Dual relationships exist. In these situations, the consultant should seek guidance of professional organizations for statements of ethics guiding the relationship.
